RICHARD Phillips has been Thornbury Running Club's sole triathlon representative over the past couple of weeks.

The Westonbirt triathlon is a relatively small event with a total of 381 finishers.

Starting with a swim, which was fourth fastest of the day, Phillips followed with a strong bike section, but lost time on the run – his weakest discipline – to finish 30th overall and second in the SupVet category.

This event was perhaps a warm-up for the Nottingham Triathlon just three days later where over 800 athletes completed the course with 56 finishers in the M50-54 category alone.

Yet again his swim was among the best and his cycling faster than average, but the run brought his position down to a creditable 23rd in his category.

Six members supported sister club Hogweed Trotters at their Hogweed Trot 10k.

First Thornbury runner was Rob Watkins (V40), who was 25th in 39:23 and achieved sixth place in his category, as did Hugh McPherson (V60) in 48:28.

Angela Bushell was the sole lady representative in 53:50.

Also completing the course were Kevin Arnold (42:48), Stuart Thomas (47:13) and Malcolm Carr (53:40).

The Davies family has again been in action with Mum Nicky refusing to allow the rest to get all the plaudits.

Rhayader AC is again holding its series of 5k and one mile races, and at the event on Wednesday, May 28, Nicky knocked nine seconds from her previous race time to finish third lady and 20th overall in 21:31.

Daughter Heidi was also competing in the 5k race, where she was 10th overall and first lady in 18:02.

In the one mile race Luke finished in 5:43, the only runner under six minutes over a course which all agreed was longer than the title suggests.

Further afield again, this time to Tanay in the Phillippines, Jo Plumbley brushed aside the opposition in the 'brutal' trail half marathon, where 155 runners took part, the slowest requiring eight hours to complete the course, putting Plumbley's 3:17:57 into perspective.

Finishing first lady by a margin of 39 minutes, she was also 15th overall.

Other running has been over the various 5k parkrun courses where at Cheltenham Mitchell Fussell is chipping away at his time, running 25:40 on May 17, 25:25 a week later down to 24:41 last weekend.

At Little Stoke on May 24, Garry Slater was first Thornbury finisher in 18:49 with Ross Phillips 23:28.

Mike Willis was almost a minute quicker than his previous parkrun time in 19:22, the second-fastest time ever recorded over the course for a V60.

The following week Slater's time was similar –18:54 – while Phillips (23:07) shaved off a few seconds.

Also running were Kevin Arnold (20:56), Malcolm Carr (25:28) and Karen Carr (27:29).

Hugh McPherson showed that persistence pays off, with a new personal best of 22:10 at the Chipping Sodbury parkrun last weekend, while Daniel Harding had his first outing at the course, finishing in a good time of 20:24.

The Sundayshill 10k will be held at 7.30pm on Monday, June 30.
