WEPL Premier Two

Keynsham (162-5) beat Thornbury (160) by five wickets

A FINE all-round performance from Gloucestershire's Tom Shrewsbury could not stop Thornbury from slipping to defeat at Keynsham.

Skipper Richard Trotman’s lost the toss and without hesitation Thornbury were asked to bat on a wicket that was still damp from the early morning rain.

At the request of Keynsham, the teams stood for a minute silence to remember former Thornbury president David Allen.

Chris Budd left a straight one which swung a mile and the umpire raised the finger for a first-ball lbw.

Richard Trotman went in at three and scored four, followed by Danny Slade (0) and Marc Lezar (4).

Dan Davis stuck around for 11 with the top six batsmen all going for less than 10 or a duck and Thornbury being 35-6.

Shrewsbury took to the wicket and started to build an innings with support from the tail, with Sayeem Waliullah playing a vast amount of shots from his personal locker.

They took Thornbury to a respectable total with Shrewsbury not out on 61, Sayeem hitting 22, Summerfield six and Tom Bradley one.

Thornbury took to the field with their tails up and it wasn’t long until Shrewsbury (2-23) took his first scalp, followed by a wicket for Sayeem (2-47) to reduce Keynsham to 22-2.

With Shrewsbury and Danny Slade (1-19) bowling maidens, Keynsham put themselves under pressure and more wickets fell, Slade being rewarded with a caught and bowled.

However, runs started to come and Keynsham got the target with just one over to spare.

Premier Two 2nd XI

Thornbury (215) lost to Downend (241-6) by 26 runs

THORNBURY suffered defeat at the hands of Downend.

Skipper Greg Mallitte won the toss asked Downed to bat first.

Downend set off well from the start with James Tunnicliffe being dispatched to all areas of the field and after two overs 25 runs came off his poor bowling. Mallitte turned to the Wormwell family trio to try and gain some control.

Marcus bowled eight overs of spin, while Harry's nine overs of medium pace picked up a pair of wickets, with John bowling seven overs for a wicket also.

Mallitte took 2-20, while Stu McWhinne and Dan Lezar bowled their five overs each for no wicket as Downend finished up with 241-6.

This left Thornbury with an achievable target with the wicket turning into a batting paradise.

Marcus Wormwell was out first ball of the innings and it was left to Lezar and Kyp Bridgen to build an innings.

With Lezar going first for 18, Bridgen and Tunnicliffe soldiered on.

It was not Tunnicliffe’ s day as he was hit on the pads and sent back to the changing room.

Bridgen continued to score runs, supported by veteran Hammond, but again didn’t find the form and was out for ten.

Thornbury's middle order and tail fought hard but finished short of their target.
