Athletics: Dursley quartet take on Aquathlon

First published in Sport

THE second in the Waterland (Cotswold Water Park) Aquathlon series took place recently, with four members of Dursley Running Club taking part – three experienced Iron Men, Ray Williams and Andy Kilby, Rob Woodward and first-timer Mel Williams.

The race comprised a 750m swim, a quick change out of the wetsuit in a transition followed by a two-lap 4.6k run around the lake.

Mel Williams, in her first open-water event, kept her nerve with a very steady start – no mean feat with a mass start of 50-plus swimmers all heading to first buoy. Ray Williams was first out of the water, with Woodward joining him in transition.

Kilby was next in, but Mel Williams was delayed fitting in an extra 200m before reaching ‘swim out’, going to show that open water swimming requires good spatial awareness as well as an ability to swim.

Everyone ran well, in particular Woodward, who was running his first race since slicing his toe in Lanzarote.

Overall it was a great result for Mel Williams, who has worked hard on her swimming.

Results: Ray Williams 14.35 (swim+T1), 20.48 (run), 35.23 (Total); Rob Woodward 15.18, 22.47, 38.05; Andy Kilby, 17.43, 21.08, 38.51; Mel Williams 23.53, 22.42, 46.34.

New Dursley Running Club member Paul Rogers took part in the Sole Sister’s Bradley Stoke 10k event on Sunday.

He completed the course in 00:59:46; on a very hot day for running Rogers was 350th out of a filed of 548 runners.

The club runs from Dursley Rugby Club on Tuesday nights. Meet at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.
