Forest Green 0 Birmingham City 1

A SINGLE first half Birmingham City goal provided a minor setback on what was otherwise an excellent first pre-season test for Forest Green, writes Richard Joyce.

There was plenty to shout about for the home side though with some promising showings from new and old faces as well as effective contributions from members of Scott Bartlett's youth team squad.

A knee problem ruled goalkeeper Steve Arnold out of contention as manager Ady Pennock gave seven of his eight summer signings a run out but Anthony Barry and Andy Mangan were noticeable absentees alongside injured duo Chris Stokes and Luke Oliver.

Clayton Donaldson gave the Championship side the lead when he calmly latched onto Reece Brown's through ball and slipped the ball into an empty net having found his way past the stranded Sam Russell.

Rovers went close to levelling a few minutes before half-time when Luke Rodgers’ effort cannoned off the post and strike partner Lee Hughes couldn't convert the follow-up as Canada international David Edgar got back to clear.

After the break Russell produced a superb right-handed stop to deny Wes Thomas.

Young custodian Paul White replaced Russell in the closing stages and produced a fine stop from Andrew Shinnie's powerful attempt.

New signing Clovis Kamdjo shone in midfield and his shot which dragged wide was the final moment of an encouraging first night back at The New Lawn.
