IRELAND international Graeme McCarter will leave Gloucestershire at the end of the season after being told his contract will not be renewed.

The 21-year-old seam bowler was a regular in the NatWest T20 Blast side this season, taking 16 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 21.56 with a career-best 5-35 against Sussex at Hove, but has found his opportunities limited in other competitions.

McCarter, who joined Gloucestershire’s academy in 2008 before signing a professional contract two years ago, is currently away with the Ireland squad ahead of their tour to Australia and New Zealand and made his one-day international debut in their eight-wicket defeat against Scotland earlier this month.

He has also appeared for Thornbury in the West of England Premier League this season after being selected along with fellow outgoing all-rounder Will Gidman by the South Gloucestershire club as part of the county's draft system.

Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell said: “It is a shame that Graeme was unable to sustain the development he showed as an academy graduate.

“Graeme has been great to have around the squad and was always willing to work for the team.

“We wish him well for the future and hope to see him win a place in Ireland’s squad for the 2015 World Cup.”

McCarter has represented Ireland at under-13, under-15 and under-19 levels, making his senior debut for them in a first class match against Namibia in 2011.

In nine first class appearances for Ireland and Gloucestershire he has taken 21 wickets at an average of 36.28 and claimed ten victims at 22.10 apiece in List A cricket.

Teenage spin bowler Tom Shrewsbury, who also plays for Thornbury, is the remaining Gloucestershire player out of contract at the end of the season, but an announcement has not yet been made on his future.
