GFA County Cup (Junior) Third Round

Charfield 2 King's Stanley Reserves 0

CHARFIELD enjoyed more success in the County Cup with a hard-fought win against opposition from a higher division.

With Charfield having the better of the game in the first half, Shaun Bath went close on several occasions and Simon Miles hit the underside of the bar with a cross that deceived the goalkeeper.

For many of the players and spectators it looked like the ball had crossed the line only for the referee and his assistant to think otherwise.

Early in the second half Phil Miles and Kerien Austin were beginning to dominate the middle of the park and Joel Stoneman, Nick Bishop and Tom Stewart all had chances to put Charfield ahead.

Charfield finally took the lead in the 55th minute from a well worked corner, which found Austin on the edge of the 18-yard box, and he volleyed home, giving the goalkeeper and the defender on the line no chance.

King's Stanley had a great opportunity to equalise minutes later, however a fantastic one-handed save low down from Craig Bond denied them.

As the game wore on both Ian and Paul Lyon became more resolute in defence and full backs Cullem Glynn and Simon Miles constantly made overlapping runs to assist the wide men.

In the last quarter, with King's Stanley looking tired and Charfield substitutes Kevin Spill, Cory Bessell and Ed Fuller all on, the latter put Charfield into the next round after skipping around two defenders and slotting the ball home.
