LEE Hughes has revealed his Forest Green frustration after re-signing for his boyhood club Kidderminster Harriers on a deal until the end of the season.

The 38-year-old's contract at the New Lawn has been terminated by mutual consent to allow the former Premier League star to return to Aggborough, where he cut his footballing teeth and scored 70 goals in 139 appearances.

“Forest Green are a good club and are well run and could go places, but I have been disappointed this season,” said Hughes, who struck seven goals in 13 league starts for Rovers this campaign.

The one-time £5 million striker has been training away from the New Lawn since his final appearance against Welling on January 4.

“It was frustrating to score and get dropped the next game, but that’s the decision of the manager and I respect his decision. He knew I was disappointed and wanted to play games, but to be fair Jon Parkin has been scoring goals for fun and the lads that have come in have done really well.

“I really enjoyed my time at Forest Green and wish a great bunch of lads all the best.”

“I am delighted to return to the club, where I started my career at 16 under Graham Allner, and left when I was 21 to play for West Brom.

“I hope to score the goals, which can propel us into the play-offs and possibly face Forest Green at the end of the season.”

Smethwick-born Hughes began his career with the Harriers in 1995 before making his name with West Brom, which led to a £5m move to Coventry City in August 2001.

He returned to The Hawthorns to help Albion win promotion to the Premier League in 2002, He remained a prolific scorer with Oldham, Notts County and Port Vale before dropping down to the Conference with Forest Green in January 2014 – scoring 15 goals in 43 games.

Meanwhile, Forest Green boss Ady Pennock has paid a heartfelt tribute to the veteran striker following his New Lawn exit.

Pennock said: “I would like to thank him for what he has done in his year at Forest Green. He brought a professionalism and enthusiasm on and off the pitch.

“This is a fantastic move for Lee and his family and nice for him to go back to the club where his career started.

“I was honest with him and told him he wasn’t going to play regularly because of the form of the strikers ahead of him, but I wish him all the best.”
