WOTTON Hockey Club are closing in on one of their most remarkable seasons for years with no less than three sides heading towards titles and promotion, and a fourth looking to go up as well.

And one of those teams could clinch promotion their upward progress this weekend before a probable ‘winner-takes-all’ showdown for the title in a month.

From the Men’s first team to the Thirds and the Ladies’ First team, Wotton have swept the board across their respective leagues this term.

And The Men’s first team are on the cusp of becoming the first of those sides to land success. They are neck and neck at the top of the De Cymru And The Marches One league with Hereford, and with the two sides will are scheduled to meet in the final match of the campaign on March 21to decide the title.

But, with two teams going up to the Wales and West League Conference South, a win against lowly Cardiff Medics in Wales this Saturday will be enough to secure their place in the higher division next term.

Also, Wotton Ladies are five points ahead of their nearest challengers, Wick, at the top of the West Clubs Women’s Berkeley One League with a game in hand on their nearest challengers.

The Men’s Second team have lost just twice and drawn once from 18 matches in the Davis Wood Marches One Division and are seven points clear of second-placed Cheltenham C.

And Wotton’s Men’s Third team could complete an amazing quadruple success by rising to the top as they currently lay in third spot of the Davis Wood Marches Two Division, just six points off joint pace-setters Cirencester B and Gloucester City C but with a game in hand on the top clubs.

One man links both the Men’s First and the Ladies’ First teams as they battle for glory and Alistair Hammond said: “It is vital that we keep on winning in both teams.”

That was certainly the case last Saturday for the men as they gave themselves a massive boost for the game against the Medics by hammering Cirencester 8-0 - and away to boot!

Hammond added: “In the last couple of years, we have been rising up through the leagues and promotion would be a really good achievement for us.

“A few years ago, they (Men’s Firsts) were in the top league, the Premier One, so it has been a re-building exercise since then as we try to get ourselves back up there.”

And once promotion is secured, whether it is this week or in the coming weeks, Hammond says it is key to keep winning to set- up the title decider with Hereford.

Revenge for a 3-1 away defeat to Hereford in December will also be a massive motivator for Wotton to win the title.

“It’s a massive game. If we get promotion out of the way, we all want to have a crack at winning the league. We deserve it. We have been top of the table all season.”

Hammond is equally as proud of the other teams, particularly the ladies. “If the Ladies first team go up, it will be the highest they will ever have been – and they deserve it.

“The Men’s Seconds are top of the table and can secure promotion and that is important because, as a club, we don’t want to have too wide a gap between the Seconds and the First team in league terms as we have a lot of youngsters coming up through the sides.”
