THE OFFICAL opening of the newly resurfaced tennis courts and early season ‘Open Day’ at Chipping Sodbury Tennis Club was held last month and despite the wind, rain and terrible morning conditions the event was remarkably well supported by the hardy members of the local community and STC (Sodbury Tennis Club) members.

The court opening came at the end of what was an energetic Open Day, where the club welcomed local residents and offered them free use of the new courts along with access to coaches and club facilities. The enthusiasm of those that attended was demonstrated through their keenness to take part in the various coaching sessions available, run by the club’s own in-house team of professional coaches, headed up by Steve Johnson, CCA and fully licenced LTA coach.

Participants on the day ranged in age from pre-school through to adults and all were catered for in the vast array of tennis experiences offered by the club: beginners were encouraged in small coaching sessions to engage in the game and other more experienced players played against club members as well as in ‘drill’ sessions to see what the club had to offer. For those that didn’t fancy braving the elements, there was plenty to eat and drink in the comfort of the clubhouse!

In recognition of their outstanding achievement in winning the Avon Junior Winter league 2014/15 season (Orange Ball Section; 9 and under) the honour of cutting the ribbon to signify the official opening of the newly resurfaced courts was left to Sodbury Tennis Club’s Juniors.

Matthew Robins who formed part of the winning team was unfortunately unable to attend the official ceremony, but he played a valuable role in the team’s success throughout the season.

After the ribbon cutting, the celebrations continued with a buffet and bubbly (of course!), followed by an American Tournament for members of Sodbury Tennis Club and invited guests.

Details will soon be available of the next Open Day, planned for Saturday June 13 to coincide with the ‘Great British Tennis Weekend’.
