CAM should have been in the thick of the Gloucestershire County League Division One title race by now but, on Saturday, they could managed just that with victory over Kingsholm.
Cam will be raring to go against the men from Gloucester after their clash with Oldlands fell victim to last weekend’s washout.
With leaders Cirencester playing second-placed Westbury-on-Severn, something is bound to give in that match and a win for Cam would thrust them right into the title-chasing mix.
However, skipper Peter Hall believes that Cam should have been there already, having won four out of their seven league games, which includes last weekend’s rained-off clash.
Hall said: “We lost one match by one wicket and another by seven runs. By winning one of those, we could have been top of the league.”
If there were any crumbs of comfort from those losses, it is that they came against the top two who are both unbeaten at the moment.
Hall said: “Obviously we are disappointed that the game was cancelled on Saturday being a local derby because you always want to play those games.
“I am very happy with the start of the season we have had but I’m also a bit frustrated with the games we have lost.”
Injuries to established first team players have not helped but, on a positive note, it has meant that young talent has been given the opportunity to shine – and they have taken it with both hands, added the Cam captain.
“Developing young talent is what it is all about,” said Hall. “We brought in Jake Dolbear last year to keep wicket and he has been outstanding this season. So too has Alex Ballard (bowler).
“At the moment, we have a great team spirit and a great bunch of lads who turn out and train each week.
“We also have a lot of really good young and exciting players coming through and four or five of them are now coaching the junior sides. It’s good that they put themselves forward to go and coach the juniors and youngsters.”
And now, Hall and his squad will be chomping at the bit to get their teeth into Kingsholm but the skipper admitted it will not be easy.
“In the first game this season, our umpire went to do Kingsholm and said they have some quick bowlers and will be one of those teams right up there at the end of the season.
“All I say to the team on Saturdays is to go out and enjoy it because if you don’t enjoy it, there is no point in playing.”
And Cam will certainly enjoy themselves on Saturday evening if they triumph for a fifth time this season and climb into the title race.
