JAMES Marwood has revealed his relief after ending an unhappy spell at Forest Green.

The 25-year-old winger, son of former England and Arsenal man Brian, has re-joined National League side Gateshead on a one-year deal, after leaving Rovers by “mutual agreement”.

His final appearance for the Nailsworth outfit came in the play-off semi-final second leg defeat at Bristol Rovers, when he played a rare 90 minutes at the Memorial Stadium.

After helping Gateshead to the Conference promotion final in 2014, Marwood started last season in the Scottish Premier League with St Mirren, before moving to Forest Green on a two-year deal during the January transfer window.

A peripheral figure in the team, he struggled to make an impact and jumped at the chance to return to his roots and join former Forest Green goalkeeper Sam Russell at the Head.

Marwood said: “First of all I’d like to thank Ady Pennock at Forest Green for allowing me to leave.

“He’s a good guy in football and he understands that for me to be happy I need to be home.

“If you’re happy off the field, you’re more or less happy on it and play well. It wasn’t clicking and he’s allowed me to come back home where I belong.

“As soon as that was sorted and I knew I could return to Gateshead it was perfect for me. I’ve spent my happiest times here and the club is littered with good people from top to bottom.”

Rovers spokesman Richard Joyce said: “The club would like to thank James for his contribution in his time at The New Lawn and wish him all the best for the future.”
