GLOUCESTERSHIRE'S Hamish Marshall revealed the team’s frustration at a humbling innings and 180 runs defeat to Surrey at the Kia Oval inside three days of their LV= County Championship Second Division clash.

Surrey made 448 all out but Gloucestershire’s batsmen were hammered by career best figures of 7-20 by home paceman Tom Curran in a first innings total of just 113 all out

Then, having been forced to follow on, Surrey spinner Zafar Ansari had a red letter innings with career best figures of his own. Ansari took 6-30 as Gloucestershire were given a real beating in the second knock to finish on 155 all out.

Marshall top scored in the first innings with 34 not out which took him over two hours to achieve, and only opener Will Tavare, with 58, resisted for long in the second knock.

It was Gloucestershire’s fifth defeat this summer and they took just a solitary token bonus point from the match.

Marshall said: “That was a very disappointing batting performance indeed in both our innings. It wasn’t good enough. We were found wanting with the bat, and we also had far too many batsmen being bowled in this match.

“The pitch had a little bit in it for the seamers and spinners, and so it wasn’t the easiest of surfaces but it wasn’t the toughest you will find either to bat on. Zafar Ansari bowled very well, and there was a bit of turn for him, but it was still very disappointing from our perspective.”

Gloucestershire were already in trouble on 102 for seven at the start of day three. Indeed, Gloucestershire’s first innings lasted just 10.3 more overs than the second despite Marshall’s 34.

At tea, Gloucestershire were on the ropes at 122-6 and the final session began with Jack Taylor bounced out for on.

Curran ended Geraint Jones’s resistance on 24 and the end came soon afterwards with Ansari picking up the last two wickets.

Curran finished with 2- 37 in Gloucestershire’s second innings for match figures of 9- 57.
