Wotton Rovers U14s 3 Abbeymead 5
WOTTON Rovers opened their season with a hard fought match at home against Abbeymead on Sunday.
The hosts made an excellent start with newcomer Archie Wheeler turning home from close range after good pressure. Ben Stacey scored an absolute beauty from 25 yards out and whilst the visitors pulled one back Harry Penfold slotted home to make it 3-1 in the second half.
But the extra pace of the Abbeymead attackers exploited the tiring Wotton boys and against the run of play the Gloucester team ran out 5-3.

WOTTON were unable to build on the momentum of last week's triumph at Longwell Green as they were narrowly edged out of this cup tie by a spirited Avon side.
Avon scored first then, despite good defensive work from Denny Philips, Sam Morris, Toby Harris and Jonney Hayward, hit in their second on the break.
Following half time Wotton seemed a different team, and Avon were penned into their half. Eddie Hawkins scored a fine solo effort, and succinct passing from the midfield of Hayden Brewer, Matthew Welch and Toby Harris fed shot after shot from forwards Harrison Brain, Ewan Hadfield and Harvey Butler.
Sadly, their efforts were to no avail, but Wotton left with their pride intact.
Wotton Rovers under 14s 5 Longwell Green under 14s 0.
WOTTON were back on form in this stirring County Cup tie.
Midfield tussles characterised a bright start from both sides, but, despite some dogged tackling and incisive passing from Ewan Hadfield, Harrison Brain and Matthew Welch in midfield, it was a long range goal kick from Charles Aston that set up Korbin Walker for Wotton's first. Jonney Hayward hit Wotton's second with a powerful shot before Longwell pushed back.
The visitors were denied by the resolute defense of Danny Phillips, Toby Harris, Sam Morris, isaac Spencer before Wotton stormed back through Jack Thompson and Eddie Hawkins.
Longwell saved a penalty before Ewan Hadfield hit a third. Wotton attacked relentlessly and were rewarded with two fine goals from Tom Cranwell.
