Thornbury 61 North Petherton 8

THORNBURY reserved their best performance for some time for an eight-try demolition of North Petherton in which Tom Luke scored a hat-trick.
It was a fitting way to send popular French player Boris Elloff-Petros on his way back to Toulouse after two years where he has been a key member of the squad.
North Petherton kicked a second minute penalty but Thornbury attacked from the restart, giving the ball a lot of width.
The home forwards drove from a lineout on the North Petherton 22 and the ball was moved quickly across the three-quarter line for Tom Luke to step inside the cover and score Thornbury’s first try. His conversion hit the post but his penalty shortly after opened up an 8-3 lead.
Thornbury then attacked from a scrum and the backs ran, drew the man and passed in a sweeping movement that surged into the North Petherton 22 where Sam Higgins passed back inside for Dai Matthews to score a fine try.
Luke converted then added a second penalty to extend the lead to 18-3.
After a third Luke penalty Thornbury ripped holes in the North Petherton defence.
Jack Hussey and Jak Evans linked from a dominant scrum for Luke to score another try. His conversion saw Thornbury lead 28-3 at half time.
The scoreboard was moving again three minutes into the second half. Evans broke from a scrum and found Rich Bennett who barged through two weak tackles for the bonus point try. The conversion put Thornbury 35-3 ahead.
Three minutes later Hussey was driven over for another try from a lineout.
Thorns were called back when clear due to a scuffle between two players but a few minutes later the backs passed accurately to put Higgins for another try direct from a scrum.
Luke converted the try.
North Petherton scored a consolation try but Thorns hit back with Luke’s hat-trick try from a quick penalty. Then as the match entered injury time Thorns attacked from a scrum.
Alfie Richardson broke clear and drew the last man to put Higgins in for the final try. Luke’s sixth conversion saw Thorns win 61-8.
North Petherton caught Thornbury on a day when Thorns were hot.
Tom Luke ran great lines and contributed 36 to the Thornbury total. Jak Evans was named man of the match by the match sponsors.
