Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One

Dursley Town 2 Brockworth Albion 3

TWO goals from veteran poacher Martin Booth gave high-flying Brockworth a scare – only for Scott Montgomery to smash an emphatic late winner for the visitors.

Playing with the strong wind, Brockworth dominated possession, but Matt Workman made a last-ditch block and Pete Dykes pulled off a fine save to keep it goalless.

However, within five minutes of the turnaround, Shane Burford had headed in from a corner and he also added a fine individual effort to put Albion two goals clear.

Dursley quickly replied when Brockworth’s 48-year-old former Portsmouth midfielder Chris Burns misjudged Dykes’ long punt and Booth nipped in to halve the deficit.

The home side continued to build pressure and got their reward ten minutes from time when Booth headed the equaliser from Jack Knight’s near-post corner.

Five minutes later, though, a long ball caught out the Town defence and Montgomery brought it down before hammering an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

DURSLEY can be extremely proud of their performance in their David versus Goliath county cup tie against a Forest Green Rovers side playing in the third tier nationally.

Make no mistake, with a four-division difference between the sides, Rovers were expecting to score 20 or even 30 goals, but they had to work very hard for their ten.

Barring Shona Thornhill’s burst into the hosts’ box inside the opening 20 seconds, the entire game resembled the last two minutes of a classic FA Cup tie with bodies flying in front of shot after shot as Forest Green camped in the visitors’ half.

In addition to conceding ten goals, Town goalkeeper Jodie Turl made at least that many saves, her defenders – particularly Lucy Johnstone, Kirsty Brown and Vicky Mansell – blocked even more efforts and countless shots were off target.

Having hit six by the break, Rovers could only add four more – needing a dubious penalty, a mistake and an own goal that had to be seen to be believed to do so.

Attempting to cut out a cross just outside the box, left-back Claire Gabb managed to swerve the ball into the net as if possessed by Roberto Carlos at Le Tournoi in 1997.

Dursley: J Turl; R Dalglish, C Gabb, K Brown, L Johnstone; S Stanley, R Chittick, V Mansell, Z Gabb; A Gwyther, S Thornhill. Rolling substitutes: M Watson, N Richards, K Turl.
