County Cup
Wotton Rovers U12s 6 Churchdown Panthers 5
SUNDAY’S County Cup clash at Katharine Lady Berkeley School proved to be a belter between two very evenly matched sides.
Wotton produced a period of sublime football early on, their passing and movement leaving the visitors chasing shadows.
Jack Powell opened the scoring with a beautifully placed curler finding the top right hand corner and soon after Barney Wharin tucked home Wotton’s second after some desperate Churchdown goal line defending.
Ethan Smith was dangerous throughout and two individual efforts from him saw Wotton 4-0 up within twenty minutes.
Wotton let Churchdown back in to the game with two breakaway goals making it 4-2 at half-time.
Another goal at the start of the second closely followed by a controversial penalty saw the scores levelled.
But the Wotton boys dug deep and a free kick saw man of the match Smith get his hat-trick and when he was bundled over in the box, captain Jamie Stacey slotted home from the spot to make it 6-4.
But Churchdown wouldn’t lay down and scored their fifth to set up a nail biting finale for Wotton to hang on.
