GOAL from Laura Hayward was not enough to stop Thornbury going down to a narrow 2-1 defeat against South Gloucestershire.

Tracey Jones was prominent for the home side and there were also good displays from Alex Arnold, Rachel Underwood, Amanda Mcgarry and Lucy Woodruff while Poppy Woolnough and Nicki Bruce worked hard up front.

Liz Jenkins in goal along with Tess Wheatley, Elaine Arnold and Rosie Liddington dealt effectively with the visiting attacks.

Thornbury visit Badminton on Saturday.

WOTTON flew out of the blocks in this game and were 4-0 up at half-time thanks to two goals from captain Victoria McGuaig and one each from Katie Cruickshank and Abbie Ellis.

Thornbury keeper Larly Staton had to withdraw on the morning of the game and Hannah Williams volunteered to go in goal.

She had no chance with a couple of the goals and also made a number of good saves to deny the home side.

Jen Arnold made a promising reappearance following injury and along with Emma Matthews, Megan McLachlan and Jess Taylor contributed some nice touches.

Lauren Upham and Molly Smith worked hard up front, as did Kim Bird and Amy Bowman in mid field.

Angela Greenslade and Sara Newman defended competently while Amy Morse roamed intelligently in midfield. Thornbury host the youngsters of Clifton fifths on Saturday at Castle School 10.30am l Yate Hockey Club ladies third team fought hard for a 1-0 win against Badminton.

Both teams had opportunities to score but the goal came in the second half from Yate captain Alex Bessex after a fast counter attack from a defensive short.
