Wotton-under-Edge Ladies 1sts 0 Blockley 2
WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE Ladies first team had an early start for their fixture against Blockley on Saturday, but despite this the team were raring to go from the first whistle.
Forwards Heather Reid and Lauren Leyland made an immediate impact by pressuring the Blockley team. It was a fast paced game, with the ball rarely staying on the surface for much time as the Blockley team attempted to intimidate Wotton.
They were unsuccessful as Wotton’s skilful team played the ball creatively away from their opposition, with very high quality attacks from the midfield of player of the match Cessy Tyne, Corinne Gibson, Eilidh Rogers, Ellie Stimpson and Lauren Jones.
Unfortunately, Wotton conceded after Blockley played the ball along the back line, somehow finding its way over the goal line.
The teams went in 1-0 at half-time, but Wotton returned to the pitch with determination.
The second period was mostly played in Blockley’s half, but Wotton conceded again at a perfectly executed Blockley penalty corner.
Wotton were unlucky not to draw the game, as an under-pressure shot from the top of D smashed into the post, and a bullet short corner strike from Jones was deflected on the goal line and over the bar.
It was a spirited game from Wotton, and the club will take heart from a continually improving first XI squad.
