DURSLEY’S Ben Amigoni has been selected for the ITF Tae Kwon Do European Championships next week – but the competition could be his last competitive action on the global stage.

The personal trainer, who was second in the British Championships this season, hopes to go out on a high by getting a medal in the Budapest Euro tournament.

But the man who competes in the 70 kilo class under the Global Tae Kwon Do International federation banner, could turn his hand to working more on his training business and coaching from Sunday week due to an injury picked up last year.

Amigoni said: “I have been selected for the ITF Union European Championships 2016 and I am going to be flying out on Wednesday February 3. I have to be at the weigh-in for the competition and I am competing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before flying back on Sunday.”

Yet it was only through persuasion by GTI coach Jasper Chow that Amigoni accepted the invitation.

He said: “About 21 weeks ago, I tore my hamstring and I have never had a torn hamstring before. I could not kick above waist-high.

“I have been using my own rehab programmes and seeing a physio to recover and I have got back to about seventy per cent.

“I had to consider whether I would continue (in Tae Kwon Do) and had a big heart-to-heart with my coach (Chow). I said I was not going to apply for it (the European Championships) and he said he would be very disappointed if I did so.

“But I feel that this will be my last international competition. I feel I want to be into coaching and I have so much to give back to the spor.

“In the World Championships, I got to the quarter-finals. At the European Championships, I want to be on the podium. I know I am good enough to do it and I have to go there and do what I have to do.”
