SATURDAY’S storms devastated the local football and rugby fixture lists and gave organisers of various leagues more headaches as they cope with yet another weekend washout of their matches.

Slimbridge’s Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West clash at Larkhall Athletic in Bath was subject to an 11am pitch inspection on Saturday but officials ruled that the Larks’ Plain Ham ground in the Roman city was too wet for the match to go ahead.

The big derby in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League between Sharpness and Dursley Town was also one of the victims of the elements.

It was frustrating for both teams but especially Dursley who were looking to continue the momentum of the previous week where they won their first match of the season in the league as they beat FC Barometrics 2-1 at The Rec.

Second-placed Sharpness, meanwhile, were looking to keep the pressure on leaders Stonehouse Town, who were due to play strugglers Harrow Hill.

Both sides will try again this weekend when Sharpness play ninth-placed Charlton Rovers and Dursley are at home to Newent Town, who are fifth. Cam Bulldogs, meanwhile, face the tough task of beating leaders Stonehouse at home, while Berkeley Town have an away mid-table battle with Avonvale United.

The Gloucestershire County League also suffered with Thornbury Town’s clash with reigning champions but current strugglers Cheltenham Civil Service at the Mundy Playing Fields falling foul of the weather.

Thornbury now face a tough clash at Patchway Town, who are one place above the Thorns in sixth, on Saturday.

Frampton United were supposed to host Bishops Cleeve Reserves but will now, hopefully, be back in action away at Gala Wilton on Saturday.

Yate Town Reserves, meanwhile, were due to be at home to bottom side Kingswood. The Reserves were due to host Ellwood last night, while, on Saturday, Kingswood will have their work cut out to record their first win of the campaign when they host second-placed Henbury.
