IT was the same old story in the final medal in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA winter series last week as Brickhampton Court’s Ross Langdon beat Chipping Sodbury’s Giuseppe Licata by one shot at Henbury.

Langdon spent time as an assistant at the Bristol course so used his knowledge to post three-under-par 66 for his seventh victory of the season.

They were the only players in the 23-strong field to break par on a day that started brightly with light winds before a couple of wintry flurries caused inconvenience during the day.

The pair have become almost inseparable this winter. Langdon holds the upper hand the Total Triumph Order of Merit with a very healthy 41-point lead ahead of the Total Triumph Strokeplay Championship final next week. Barring any disasters he is clear favourite to dethrone two-time champion Licata.

The season concludes on Wednesday with the prestigious 36-hole Total Triumph Strokeplay at Mendip Spring Golf Club. The players will go out in reverse OOM order.

The Henbury course was in good condition and some tricky pins were tucked away to test the players. Langdon opened with a birdie but then dropped his only shot of the day. He picked up his strokes at the fifth, 15th and 16th.

Whatever Licata seems to try he always finds Langdon challenging. This time he made a rollercoaster start with a birdie, bogey, bogey, birdie, eagle and a bogey over the opening six holes. After that scoring was more regular and a series of pars and a final birdie at the 10th settled his round.

Filton’s Daryl Kelley has missed a large chunk of the season due to injury but he claimed third place with 70, one clear of Burnham & Berrow’s David Haines who led the Over 40’s group. Fellow Burnham & Berrow Pro George Ryall shared fifth with the host club’s Paul Ryder on 72.
