THE CAPTAINS CUP is one of the highlights of Thornbury GC Senior’s season.

This year, the event was rewarded with a record entry of 87 members in fine weather on a beautifully set up Marlwood Course.

The ideal conditions were reflected by golf of a very high standard with the result going down to the wire late in the day.

There were only six points separating the top 12 players so count back was crucial in determining the final plac- ings.

The first three all had their handicaps cut by two shots.

Bill Baker was the overall winner (with 43pts) closely followed by Howard Marshall and Dave Cockerell (41).

Five players another two points adrift:- Bob Freebury, Tim Worswick, Dave Cutcliffe, Mike Doust and Bob Thomas.

The Veterans prize went to Phil Faulkner (38).

Colin Mealing and Ed Ryan won bottles of champagne for the nearest the pins.

Tim Worswick triumphed in the Putting Competition.

The most entertaining part of the day was played out on the 172yd par three 14th hole, however.

Assistant Professional Nye Brown laid down a ‘nearest the pin’ challenge.

Sleeves of balls were on of- fer for just hitting the green and nine free lessons were claimed for beating the Pro.

The Marlwood Course is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Cotswold hills.

It offers a challenging and exciting round for golfers of all abilities to enjoy.

At 6333 yards, the Marlwood Course will test every part of one’s game.

A unique hole is the picturesque 17th where a wayward tee shot is likely to find one of the lakes either side of the fairway.
