KVCC (142 all out) vs Pencombe (155 all out)

ON their twentieth visit to Kingswood, the visitors brought what looked like a much younger side than usual, which their hosts hoped would make them a tad weaker than normal; especially as the Kingswood core had imbibed too freely the previous evening.

Winning the toss and deciding to bat, visiting skipper James Brown opened with old hands Ted Thomas and Paul Cresswell.

Michael Barnes (8-1-51-3) struck in the third over and had Cresswell caught by Angus McCubbin for a duck with only three on the score.

Alan Davies (15) joined Thomas and put 37 on the score before the guile of Barnes provided a catch for Guy Lendon in the ninth over.

Steve Brotherwood (6) joined Thomas who lasted another five overs before being bowled by Oliver Niddrie (8-1-35-2) with the score on 53.

Skipper Brown entered the fray and watched as Brotherwood fell to a catch by home captain, Ben Foxwell, from the bowling of Rory Thomas (5-2-5-2) then Phil Brooke bowled by Thomas for no runs then James Hine (7) run out by a fantastic throw from Sam Powell.

He was then joined by teenager Ryan Abell and the partnership put on 33 till Brown fell to Oliver Niddrie with Joe Field holding a difficult catch.

Charlie Cresswell took to the crease briefly but was caught by McCubbin from the bowling of Field (7-0-17-1). Chris Brown (8*), son of James, partnered Abell and helped put another 37 on the score before Abell became Barnes' third victim, but he topped the scoring with 40.

After a rain induced stoppage for an excellent tea, young Chris was joined by scorer Dave Harris (9) and these two nudged the total to 155.

With what looked like a simple task, for a change against Pencombe, the Kingswood openers Kevin Morgan (20) and Callum Niddrie (15) took up the chase.

Losing the No. 2 and No. 3 batsmen in the fifth over hadn't been part of the plan; Niddrie caught by Phil Brooke, off Harris (8-3-43-3) and Joe Field bowled by Hine for nought.

Teenager Sam Powell (19) joined Morgan to move the score to 57 before he too was bowled by Hine (7-0-27-2). The veteran McCubbin (42) then joined Morgan and helped double the score to 114 till he was bowled by James Brown (4-1-18-2) in the 19th over.

During his spell at the crease he had seen the demise of Morgan, lbw to Ted Thomas, and Rory Thomas, caught by Hine, bowled by skipper Brown.

A valiant tail, Joss Beeley (11), Ollie Niddrie (0), skipper Foxwell (3) and Mike Barnes carrying his bat for 3, all were partners to Guy Lendon (11) and managed to increase the score to 142 all out with 10.5 overs remaining.

An excellent and entertaining day's cricket on a slightly damp pitch and the early tea enabled everyone to enjoy Andy Murray's great win at Wimbledon.
