WES Burns has penned a new two-year contract with Bristol City, with a further 12-month option, before moving to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen on loan.

Burns, who triggered a contract extension in April, has been rewarded for a fantastic end to 2015/16 on loan at Fleetwood Town, where he scored five times in 14 games.

The 21-year-old attacker was in such prolific form that he earned a call-up to the Wales squad ahead of Euro 2016.

Burns has put pen to paper on his new City contract and immediately moves to Aberdeen for the 2016/17 campaign, where his manager will be Derek McInnes – the man who handed the youngster his senior debut when in charge at Ashton Gate in 2013.

Head coach Lee Johnson said: “The loan spell at Fleetwood was important and I’ve seen Wes come back this summer with a gravitas of a decent player.

“He’s signed a contract that commits his long-term future to the club. We believe in him and he’s our player – it’s important people know that.

“He still has some career progression to become an established Championship player, in my opinion. He’ll now get the chance to play for a massive club like Aberdeen.

“I want to give him that game environment. They’ve got the competition of Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish Premiership as well as Hearts, and they’re also in Europe.

“Derek McInnes knows him well from his time at Ashton Gate. Wes is very quick and that will make him stand out in Scotland.

“It’s a bit dangerous because we need to protect ourselves in one way, but we believe in his future and there’s a pathway for where he needs to be.”

Burns said: “I’m delighted to have committed myself for the next two years, hopefully three, to Bristol City.

“The loan to Aberdeen allows me to play regularly, which is something I need, and against some top clubs like Celtic and Rangers in front of 50,000 people, as well as in Europe.

“I’ve spoken to the gaffer in pre-season and he says he’s already seen an improvement after the Fleetwood loan at the end of the last campaign. I’m hoping the Aberdeen move can help me even more.”

Burns switched from Cardiff City’s Academy to the Ashton Gate youth setup at the age of 16.

From there he progressed into the first team, making his debut against Leicester City in January 2012 – ironically a 4-0 defeat that ended McInnes’ reign.

Burns has now played more than 50 games for City, as well as spending time on loan at Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Cheltenham Town and, most recently, Fleetwood.

The youngster has been a revelation for his country’s Under-21 side, scoring six times in 16 appearances and joined the preliminary senior squad’s training camp ahead of Euro 2016 in France, albeit without going on to make the final 23.

Cardiff-born Burns has now committed his longer-term future to City and will embark on an exciting loan spell at Aberdeen in the season ahead.

The Dons’ exploits in finishing second in the Scottish Premiership means Burns can look forward to European football at Pittodrie, as well as the challenge of Old Firm giants Celtic and Rangers in the season ahead.

City have an option to recall Burns in January or allow him to complete the season in Scotland.
