IT WAS a beautiful, warm summer day last Saturday in BS3 as our season began with a home game against newly promoted Wigan Athletic.

The Latics won League One convincingly in the end last season and on paper could’ve been an opening day potential banana-skin. That looked all the more likely when the away side took the lead on 32 minutes through Alex Gilbey.

The former Colchester United player had been a transfer target for City and he showed us what we missed out on with a well-taken side footed shot from 20 yards. Truth be told, we were poor in the first period but thankfully that all changed af - ter the half-time interval.

We began the half playing with more purpose but things significantly improved halfway through the second period when Johnson brought on Reid and Chelsea loanee Abraham.

The latter only joined City on Friday but went straight into the squad having scored an impres- sive 74 goals in 98 games at youth level for the London club.

It took just 15 minutes for the 18 year old to find the net. O’Neil’s corner into the box was headed in by the new recruit to set the game up for a grandstand finish.

City poured forward in the closing 10 minutes and were rewarded in the 90th minute as O’Neil’s specu- lative volley was guided home by Bristolian Reid to secure all 3 points.

On Tuesday evening City made the trip to Wycombe Wanderers for an EFL Cup first round tie.

City’s record in this competition has been pretty wretched over the years but we have made it into round two courtesy of that man again – Tammy Abraham – who scored City’s winner in the first half with a smart finish into the far corner of the goal from close range.

On Saturday, August 13 we make our first ever appearance at the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion (3pm).

The Brewers are another newly promoted club, who will no doubt be look - ing to catch teams cold early on in the season.

Tuesday, August 16 sees City make the long trip to East Anglia to face Norwich City at Carrow Road (7.45pm).
