SOUTH Gloucestershire and Stroud College boxer Daryl Dunne took home a gold medal at the 2016 Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan Co. Wexford, last weekend.

The prestigious tournament saw boxers from all over Europe attend the three day competition.

Daryl Dunne aged 17 from Downend Boxing Club took on Gavin Bradshaw from Drimnagh in a straight final in the Youth 64k category.

Power punching saw Dunne force the Dublin boxer onto the back foot for all three rounds, prompting a protection count in the last, to secure a unanimous judges verdict.

Following this, 17 year old AASE student Nicole Flourentzou took part in a straight final, meeting the tough Kayleigh Woods from Co. Kildare in the female youth 64k class.

After a fast start and taking the first round, Nicole was being caught by counter attacks from the more experienced Woods, who took a split verdict.

Wearing her silver medal, Nicole was pleased with her performance. She said: "It seems so long since I last boxed. It's great to have my first contest away from home at such a big tournament."
