SLIMBRIDGE want to build on the momentum from a brilliant Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West victory over Salisbury on Saturday when they travel to AFC Totton this weekend.

The 2-1 win, with over 150 fans travelling from Salisbury, saw Slimbridge victorious for the first time in nine matches since their 1-0 FA Cup first qualifying round replay victory over Fleet Town on September 7.

And it was the first league triumph since they beat Yate Town by 2-1 away at the Jelf Stadium on August 13 although they have also drawn five times out of 12 league games this season.

Lee Smith got the winner last Saturday after Jack Twyman had scored the first before Salisbury’s Oliver Mehew equalised virtually straight away.

Manager Leon Sterling was, naturally, proud of his team and said that, after such a period without a victory to savour, they enjoyed their win over a team managed by former Leicester City and Birmingham striker Steve Claridge and who were reckoned, at the start of the campaign, to be one of the favourites for promotion.

Sterling said: “The win for us was two fold in that we have not won in the league since August and not won in nine games. It was a relief in getting that win and beating a side like Salisbury.

“Over the last couple of months, I don’t think we have played particularly badly but you will find, in this league, that when we have our good spells in games, we have to be taking our chances.

“It’s small margins in this league and, on Saturday, we took our chances when they came.”

The points built up by Slimbridge during their unbeaten run at the start of the campaign have been something of a godsend as they struggled to get a win under their belts in the past weeks.

But Sterling said: “There was no real panic from myself and the management team as we are well away from danger.

“Although we were not winning, our start in August gave us a platform. If we do lose a few, it is not the end of it. We keep the lads calm and that gives them the confidence to do what they did last Saturday.

“In this league, back-to-back wins are hard so we go to Totton, who are another big side in this league, and try to replicate what we did against Salisbury.”
