KEEN to add more firepower, Forest Green boss Mark Cooper is set to swoop for a new striker this week.

After seeing a nine-point lead at the top chopped down to one in the space of eight days, the SNJ understands Cooper has been given the green light by chairman Dale Vince to make a bid for the unnamed player, who should pen a deal before Rovers return to league action on Saturday, December 17 at home to Dover.

Cooper revealed: "You can see we are a good team, but we have to score more goals and we need to strengthen at the top end of the pitch for certain and hopefully before the next game we will have one in that is a real handful and can occupy defenders."

Rovers are without a game this weekend, but Cooper is content to let his side recharge their batteries.

He added: "The break gives everybody a chance to clear their heads, comeback in and be ready for work and make sure we are ready for the second part of the season. There are 23 games to go -69 points, loads of games to play and loads of points to play for."

Meanwhile, Cooper refused to turn on the hairdryer in a 3-1 defeat at Wrexham on Saturday, but Darren Carter's seventh-minute penalty miss proved pivotal and gave Wrexham the energy to gain their first victory in five games.

"I was very clam to be honest and tried to be constructive, it had gone - and at 2-0 down we had to make changes to get bodies forward," said Cooper.

"We had all the game in the second-half and we have to win that game with the amount of play we had. We need to be a little bit more streetwise and manage situations when we are under pressure."

"I was disappointed with the result because we started really well and dominated the early part of the game.

"We created enough stuff in and around the box to score a bag full of goals , but we haven't produced that little bit of ability to get us that second goal, when we really went for it in the second-half and when it goes to 2-1 you think we are going to go on and get it back and go on and win the game, but we shouldn't be chasing the game with two soft goals at 2-0 down.

"Wrexham didn't really have to work hard, we have to defend better than that."

However, Cooper garnered a positive, the second-half debut of Manny Monthe, who signed for Rovers on Thursday from National League South outfit Bath City.

"The big fella ( Manny Monthe) looked a real handful on the left- hand side – powerful, quick and a great left-foot – and he is another one that gives us something to work with for certain."

Rovers' next match will be an FA Trophy first-round home tie against Conference South side Truro City on Saturday, December 10 at the New Lawn.

Truro will include former Forest Green winger Les Afful in their squad.
