PERTH Scorchers T20 head coach Justin Langer will trying to get Gloucestershire’s Michael Klinger into his country’s national side for their trip to Sri Lanka in February after the master batsman smashed Perth Scorchers to the Big Bash League title over the weekend.

Klinger smashed an unbeaten 71 in 49 balls as Perth Scorchers chased down their 141-9 target set by Big Bash League final opponents Sydney Sixers as Perth reached 144-1 with 25 balls to spare at the WACA Ground in Perth.

Sam Whiteman hit 41 in the Scorchers reply as the pair dined out on the Sixers bowling, Klinger hitting a six at the end to seal the deal.

Gloucestershire’s Andrew Tye also bowled for the Scorchers finishing with 0-25 from his four overs.

Scorchers coach Langer says he will do everything he can to ensure Klinger gets a long-awaited call-up into Australia's T20 squad.

The 36-year-old is yet to earn international honours, despite an outstanding domestic career in first-class, one-day, and T20 ranks.

And Klinger, who lead Gloucestershire to 2015 Royal London One-Day Cup victory at Lord’s in September 2015, told Gazette Sports editor Gary Baker back then that he would like the chance to represent his country at some stage.

The Aussie batting master said: “I feel that I am at a point where I am at my best in Twenty20 cricket and still getting better. “But there are a lot of good players (in the squad). There may be a possible Australian call-up at some stage and I still hold on hope.

“They (Australia selectors) have shown their hand at picking guys in form and not dependent on their age. It may be in the short format if Test cricket does not come up.”

There have been many calls in recent seasons for Klinger to earn international honours in the short-form game, and Langer has added his voice now to tell the Australian selectors to pick his man.

He said: "I might have a say (in persuading them). I don't know how much of a say. But I'll certainly be putting his name up.

"He's just shown over so many years what a champion he is. I know it would be a dream come true for him (to earn a call-up).

"It's a bit like Chris Rogers and Adam Voges - some of those senior players have an impact. Even if it's just for three games, Klinger deserves it.

"He's helped us win three games this year off his own bat. He's an outstanding person. He deserves to be enjoying that success."

Klinger scored three half-centuries during the Big Bash League campaign over the December and January period, and captained the side when Adam Voges missed several games with a hamstring injury.

The right-hander has been one of the most consistent batsmen in domestic competitions in both Australia and England, having played the last four seasons at Gloucestershire.

He was in the hunt to replace Usman Khawaja for the 2016 day-night Test against New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval, only for selectors to recall Shaun Marsh instead.

The three-match T20 series between Australia and Sri Lanka starts on February 17 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Klinger has already indicated that he will not be back in Gloucestershire to play a full season but may be over to play in the one-dayers.
