Thornbury Squash Club news

Thornbury A made it three wins from three matches with a comprehensive 18-7 victory over Bath University.

Craig Webb and Ryan Wilson both took their games 3-1 and Jeremy Harris looked in complete control in his 3-0 win at number 1 string.

Matt Bedwell battled hard to win his match 3-2 whilst Callum Davidson suffered the reverse scoreline against his opponent. A pleasing win against a strong Uni line up sees the A's in second place at the halfway point of the season.

Thornbury B team had a must win fixture away at Vivo to increase their slim chance of staying in the Premier C division.

Captain Justin Edwards was on first and was on form against a much better opponent. It was a long drawn out match with some interesting referee decisions on both sides but was edged out in the fifth losing 3-2. Dale Curtis was on next and managed to get the opening game but lost the match 3-1.

Mark Toseland played extremely well against the current England girls U17 No4 and battled through with some clever shots and thoughtful game strategy winning the match 3-1. The performance of the night from the Gloucester player.

It wasn't Alex McMillan's night who went down in straight sets losing the match 3-0 but he will inevitably bounce back for the next fixture.

Finally Chris Hutchence was on and put in a sterling performance against his opponent turning a first game deficit into a very convincing 3-1 win, another great performance from our second Gloucester player. A break next week before the all important away fixture against Lansdown.

Thornbury C's losing streak continued in division 1 with a 4 matches to 1 loss against Weston A. Mick Dixon was on form to win his match against Emma Lane 3-1 and whilst Nigel Tovey and Cliff Hall did well to take a game from their higher ranked opponents the result was never in doubt.

Thornbury D produced an extremely important win in a tight division 3 defeating Redland 17-6. Nick Clifton and Bruce Newman always looked likely to win in their 3-0 victories and Pete Bowen managed to come from behind after losing the first set 9-0 to see off his opponent 3-1.

Colin Preece missed out with a 3-1 loss but the performance of the night was from Ian Johnson against Jon Platt.

The marathon match was poised at 2-2 and in the 5th set Platt raced out to an 8-1 lead only for Johnson to fight back and take it 10-8.

Thornbury E were outclassed by Redland G in division 5 suffering a heavy 19-2 defeat. Graham Dono and Matt Brown picked up the Thornbury points, the loss sees the E team remain bottom of the league with 1 win from 5.
