WOTTON-Under-Edge could complete a remarkable season in the GoCrea8 Hockey League on Saturday with a big cherry on their cake.

The club’s men’s first team are two points behind leaders Westbury and UB in the Championship going into the final weekend of the season.

And, if Wotton beat strugglers Newent at Wotton Community PARC on Saturday then Westbury would need to win to claim the title.

Wotton are currently three goals better off than the leaders so a draw for Westbury would mean they lose out on the title on goal difference with both teams level at the top on match points.

However, Wotton did themselves no favours in their battle for the title last Saturday when they went down to a fourth league defeat of the season over the Severn Bridge at Cardiff and Met B.

It was always going to be a difficult game as Cardiff and Met B are in third place and it turned out to be so with the Welsh side winning a tight match 2-1.

However, it could have been worse and Wotton can thank near rivals Gloucester City for a remarkable result as they held Westbury and UB to a 4-4 draw.

Wotton have already secured promotion to the Premiership but, if results go their way this Saturday, they will head to the league’s highest division with another title to add to their collection after their other promotions in the past three years.
