CHIPPING Sodbury’s bid from promotion out of the Gloucester Premier League took a dent on Saturday as they suffered last-gasp heartache against St Mary’s Old Boys.
It was a battle of third-placed Sodbury against the team above them.
And in a blistering finish, Sodbury were 15-14 down going into the last minutes but took the lead when fly-half Dan Bradley, who scored a fifty-metre try earlier in the game, kicked a penalty against a wild wind blowing into his face to put his side 17-15 in the lead.
But, after St Mary’s gave up the chance of trying to kick a long-range penalty to win the game and opted to run the ball, they found a gap on the right wing with ten seconds left and went over in the corner.
Sodbury were two points behind St Mary’s before kick-off – as they are ‘owed’ four points from the Rugby Football Union in the official league table because their result against Longlevens was submitted incorrectly – but now, with a losing bonus point, they are five points in arrears.
