THORNBURY Town’s season came to an end with two victories away from home which have secured a fourth place finish in the Gloucestershire County League this season.

Last Wednesday night, Thornbury took on Bishops Cleeve Reserves away from home and came out on top by 4-1.

It was a youthful and energetic home side that Thornbury faced and they enjoyed a lot of early possession.

Thorns struggled to string a sequence of passes together for a while.

Despite their domination, Cleeve did not create any clearcut chances and Alex Lippiatt in Town’s goal was rarely troubled.

It was Thornbury who came closest to opening the scoring midway through the half when skipper Pete Fowler got on the end of Luke Franklin’s free-kick but his shot hit the post.

However, Town took the lead on 39 minutes when Nathan Sage’s long ball over the Cleeve defence found Tom Webb who cut inside his marker before lobbing the ball over keeper Trigg and into the net.

Six minutes into the second-half, the hosts equalised when Cooper’s long range effort gave Lippiatt no chance. Cleeve pushed forward in search of another but the Town defence weathered the storm.

And they retook the lead on 65 minutes when Marcus Wormwell’s pass found Craig Lancastle who steered the ball past Trigg.

Seven minutes later, a fine move involving Wormwell, Lancastle and Toby Bennett saw Bennett put Franklin through on goal and the midfielder drew the keeper before curling the ball round him into the corner of the net.

Five minutes from time, Thorns wrapped up the points when Lippiatt’s long clearance found Lancastle clear of the home defence and the striker lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head into the net to give Town a comfortable win.

Then, last Saturday, Thornbury added to their victory tally with another away triumph, this time 2-1 at Henbury.

Thornbury took a seventh minute lead when good work from Ollie Bradley down the right had forced a corner and Toby Bennett’s resultant kick was firmly headed home at the far post by Joe Guest for his first goal of the season.

After this, Thorns were in control for much of the half without creating too many chances.

The closest they came to doubling their lead was midway through the half when a long ball from defence found Will Howard but Henbury keeper Carr was quickly off his line to clear the danger.

The home side’s chances of getting on terms weren’t helped when striker Reece Purnell was sent-off five minutes before the break.

They were almost made to pay a couple of minutes later when Jones headed clear from Will Howard but Luke Franklin picked up the loose ball and his shot from distance curled just the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw Henbury having the early possession but Town’s defence snuffed out any threat and they doubled their lead on sixty minutes when Mark Viner was fouled by Carr.

The keeper picked up a booking and then had to pick the ball out of the net as Bennett’s spot-kick sent the keeper the wrong way.

Thorns came close to extending their lead when Howard’s shot was saved by Carr and Asher Budd’s effort was blocked.

However, with ten minutes left, Jack Mills gave Henbury a lifeline when he scored direct from a free-kick on the edge of Town’s penalty area but Thornbury saw the game out to earn their victory.
