FOREST Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has called on Gloucestershire to roar his side onto promotion when they face their date with destiny on Sunday.

Rovers are in the Vanarama National League play-off final for the second successive time and face Tranmere Rovers for a place in the Football League next season.

It will be the greatest achievement in Forest Green’s history if they go up but Vince says it will only be the beginning of a massive drive to take the outfit into the big time and a place in the Championship.

Vince and the board are already planning a new stadium for the club, and believe Forest Green can take the big leap into the Football League after suffering play-off final agony 12 months ago when losing 3-1 to Grimsby Town.

The chairman said: “It’s been another great year for Forest Green. We’re in the play-offs again and at Wembley again, with the strongest team and manager combination we’ve ever had. I think there’s every chance for promotion to League Two and for the club to make some history at Wembley.

“I want to shout out to all football fans in the district and even Gloucestershire to come and join us at Wembley. Get behind our boys and help give your local team a push over the line. It’s going to be a fantastic occasion.

“There’s a lot of football fans in the district and county who support Premiership or Championship teams, and not all of those have a second, lower league team. “We hope football fans will come to Wembley, support our club and see us up into League Two, which would be great for the county.

“That’s the first step in our big plan to get to the Championship. We’ve been working at this for a few years and every time we are getting closer. “Each time we don’t get promoted, we’re stronger because we make improvements on and off the pitch. When we get to League Two, we’ll thrive.”

Forest Green reached the play-off final after beating Dagenham and Redbridge over two semi=final legs last weekend. They drew 1-1 in Dagenham last Thursday night before Rovers won 2-0 at the New Lawn on Sunday.

Now it is up to manager Mark Cooper and his side to beat a Tranmere Rovers team which finished second behind title winners Lincoln City this season.

Cooper, who replaced Ady Pennock as Rovers boss in May 2016, watched from the Wembley dugout as caretaker boss Scott Bartlett led the side out 12 months ago when they lost to Grimsby.

Now it is up to Cooper to get the formula right and, ahead of the big day, he is in relaxed mood.

The former Peterborough, Swindon Town and Notts County boss, who guided Swindon to a League One play-off final in 2015, said: “It was a very good performance against Dagenham on Sunday. The first ten minutes were edgy, but after that we looked good and managed the game well.”

Cooper was delighted with midfield duo Drissa Traore and Charlie Cooper, adding: “The midfielders were outstanding.

“We’ve got some young lads in there and they were really good for their age. Hopefully we can replicate the same performance at Wembley on Sunday.

“I’m feeling calm. We’ve got another game and we’ve got a shot at getting into the Football League.”
