THORNBURY lost their first West of England Premier League Prem 2 Glos/Wilts match of the season on Saturday when they went down at home to Goatacre.

After a great thirty runs victory away at Chippenham seven days earlier, Thornbury were defeated by four wickets at The Ship Field last weekend.

Thornbury were put into bat by Goatacre and soon suffered an early collapse.

Opener Marcus Wormwell was out for five from 12 balls, and number three Josh Slade was bowled for a duck.

Goatacre’s Matthew House did the damage as he skittled out number four Vishal Mamgai and Luke Davis, at number five, for just two between them.

Danny Slade came and went for four and Thornbury were looking in severe danger of not getting a decent total.

It left Thornbury on a desperate 37-5, with opener Dan Davis sticking around at the other end from the damage.

Davis was on 23 when Danny Slade went but then forged a decent partnership with wicketkeeper Sam Summerfield as they recovered the situation and took Thornbury over the one hundred mark before Summerfield fell for 31.

Davis eventually went for a solid 62 with the total on 122, and Thornbury were grateful to the tail-enders for wagging well so that they had something to defend.

After Jack Gillett went for seven, Tom Bradley and Joshua Morris, at numbers nine and ten respectively, held out to take the total to 163 before Bradley departed for 23.

And, when bowler Luke Franklin was run-out for three, it left Morris on 16 and Thornbury on 175 all out.

It was going to be a difficult total to defend but Thornbury got off the starting blocks well when Franklin trapped Goatacre opener Lachlan Beggs lbw for a duck.

However, Goatacre dug in and everyone else who went to the crease hit double figures before they returned to the pavilion.

Thornbury were not helped by giving away thirty extras, as Goatacre finished on 175-6.

Franklin was the best of the Thornbury bowlers with three wickets for 46.

And Thornbury seconds had little joy either when they went to Cam in the Gloucestershire County League second division.

Cam won by a thumping 192 runs after reaching a total of 252 for six from their 45 overs and then bowling Thornbury seconds out for just sixty inside 19 overs.

Only opener James Tunnicliffe, with 33, and wicketkeeper Ollie Humphries, at number four who hit 17, reached double figures as Thornbury lost eight wickets for just three runs as Cam’s Pete Hall and Ben Holloway completely decimated the opposition.

Meanwhile, Thornbury thirds were involved in an incredible game against Bedminster fourths in the Bristol and District League Division Nine.

Bedminster reached 226 all out in their innings, with Thornbury’s Sam Williams getting four wickets.

Thornbury thirds also reached 226 in their forty overs, with opener Simon Weeks leading the way with 62 runs that included seven boundaries and two sixes.

Number three Carl Botha hit 34, number five Andy Weeks hammered 47 and Oliver Nash contributed 21 not out in the Thornbury total.

Thornbury thirds were also helped by the wayward bowling of the opposition as Bedminster fourths gave away 47 extras.
