FOREST GREEN boss Mark Cooper is happy to play a transfer waiting game.

Despite making two swift summer signings last week, Cooper, who expects to operate with a squad of 20 to 22 players next season, is not intending to cast his fishing rod into recruitment waters this week.

“I’m not going to rush into signings,” said Cooper. “I can’t afford to make any mistakes in the recruitment - we have got to get it right. We might have to wait until some players, who think they will get League One or Championship moves, get left without a club - and then they come into our pay bracket - we might get some real bargains.”

Cooper admitted his phone is red hot with agents trying to market their clients to the EFL newcomers, but the perceived ‘moneybags’ tag is wide of the mark, according to the Rovers’ boss.

“Everyone thinks the players are earning lots of money per week,” he added. “We get some agents suggesting players we could never afford, but the closer we get to pre-season, some will come into our pay structure and get a little desperate and want to get sorted out.”

As a non-league club, Rovers had the luxury of operating without a transfer window, but they will now come under EFL rules.

Cooper explained: “This season we come under the due restriction of the transfer window, so once August has finished, we can’t sign any more players until January and when January is finished we can’t sign any more players until the end of the season, so we have to make sure we get our squad in place before the end of August or before that as we can’t sign any loans.”
