MIKE Crompton had the stand-out result at the end of a busy week for Dursley Running Club.

He placed 14th overall and sixth senior man in the 31-mile Chiltern Trail Ultra which included just over 330ft in elevation.

Completing his first Ultra, Crompton started fast which led to ‘the wheels coming off’, in his own words. But despite this, it was a great first attempt.

He completed the course in 04:38:03 hours.

Also completing her first ever Ultra was Annette Keevil, another amazing Dursley RC Walk2Run graduate, who finished the one day, 50K race in the Stones Ultra in 06:42:11 hours. The competitive week started on Tuesday night when persistent drizzle turning to rain at times but made for good running conditions for the 72 athletes competing in the second race of the club handicap series.

Trish Mansell was first home over the 3.7 mile course in 31:51, Sarah Miles came in like a train for second place and a four minute improvement on race one.

Ben Houghton was first male home in 10th. Mark Brasier was fastest man on the night 22:12mins, Robyn Jackson quickest woman in 22:18mins, and another big improver was Emma Boxall who went from 99th in race one to fifth in race two with a three minute improvement.

Wednesday night saw David and James Durden at Cheltenham Harriers Summer Open athletics event, with Durden senior running 11.02mins in the 3,000m. James Durden clocked 02:39.9mins in the 800m and threw 16.91metres in the javelin.

Thornbury RC’s 10K took place on Thursday. It is not a flat race, and as such super quick times are not likely.

However, this did not stop an outstanding showing by Dursley athletes.

Mark Spiggings was first home for the club, 15th overall in 42:42mins and just two seconds ahead of Peter Chaffer who was first MV55, the first of three age category winners.

Alice Lewis was one of these three and first DRC woman home in 48:33mins, with Shona Darley first FV40 next woman home. With these four, Dursley had 11 top ten category finishers including: Lise Hindshaw third FV40, Dave Andrews third MV65, Sue Carter fourth FV55, Steve Rugman sixth MV50, Diana Gore sixth FV65, Dave Halford eighth MV40, Mark Sprigings tenth SenMale.

There were a host of parkrun personal bests on Saturday, with Graham Tudor and Chris Young going under 22 minutes at Kingsway.

They were joined by Jake Mathews and Ethan Mathews, Dursley juniors, Damian Davis, Caroline Easthope Harper, Jane Lamper, Deborah Moulder, Terry Clother and Adreline Davies.

At Wotton, Mathew Read was third overall in 20:08mins, the sixth fastest DRC athlete at the venue, with Kris Rhymer running a PB of just over 24 minutes.

Mark Brasier was fastest at Kingsway in 19:41mins, yet again Neil Hodgson was fastest DRC parkrunner with a sizzling 18:11mins, his fastest ever parkrun. Charley Palmer got all touristy and went up to Gloucester North, Shona Darley Wycombe, Charlie Taylor Seaton whilst Julie and Michael Froggatt made it to Rouen.

Slightly later that day DRC members Alan Honey and Neil Truelove organised a mini orienteering event, teams trying to get to as many checkpoints as possible over either one or two hour events. Nigel Sankey and Richard Hogg won the long course and Mike Brown and Charlotte Palmer the short course. In the evening the Bourton Mile Challenge saw Mike Brown first home for DRC in 05:29, 28th (9th SenM), Alice Lewis 06:34, 2nd FV55, Karen Eadon 08:42 and Eileen Hieron 2nd LV 65plus in 08:45.

Finishing the weekend off was Mark Sprigings who competed in the Run the River Event along the River Avon. Before he raced he watched son Harry compete in the 50m race and daughter Olivia in the 1K run. No doubt inspired by their efforts Spriggings placed 7th in 01:45:32, (3rd SenM).

The previous weekend had seen DRC member Lewis Saunders represented the DRC-Tri Team on Saturday the 8th at the Upton on Severn Standard distance triathlon, he came third in his age group in 2hrs 41 mins. Avrill Yearsley took part in the 'Long Course Weekend Wales 10K' in Tenby on Sunday 9th, she finished 1st FV65, also beating the FV60s, in 58:16. Important news from the Boddington 10K Pete Brown won his age category, MV70, his first ever category win.
