Wotton-under-Edge Ladies 1sts 3 Redland UWE 2nds 1
WOTTON-under-Edge Ladies' attacking form wins the day against a strong visiting team.
Wotton attacked from the first whistle, and Lauren Leyland and Millie Mayer pressurised the Redland defence immediately, with support from the wingers Lauren Jones, Elodie Sparrow and Naomi Culpepper. Despite the pressure, and a series of well-worked short corners, with some excellent strikes from Natalie Groome, Wotton were unable to go ahead.
By the middle of the first half, Redland had begun to find each other, and were able to string passes together, cutting out the Wotton midfielders. However, inners Olivia Green, Myra Patterson and captain Izzy Grimes were able to match them.
Despite this, Redland began to attack the goal, necessitating some excellent keeping from Jane Rogers, and a nifty goal line clearance from player of the match Alaina Herbert.
The half ended with Wotton on a very promising looking attacking break, which then set the pace and intent for the second half.
A clever run up the left wing and along the back line from Lauren Jones, resulted in the first goal, where Jones managed to squeeze the ball confidently between keeper and post on a very narrow angle.
The play was similarly replicated minutes later when Sparrow sprinted up the right wing and back line, audaciously lobbed the keeper on another tight angle to put Wotton 2-0 ahead.
A well worked short corner from Redland saw a slight wobble when the score line hit 2-1, but with attack the best form of defence, Wotton won a short corner, which was converted by a trademark Millie Mayer strike from top of D.
Captain Izzy Grimes will no doubt be pleased with this team performance, where creative passing interspersed with lightning speed and all-round intent won the game.
