MIKE Crompton’s run at the Broadway Half on Sunday was the competitive highlight of the weekend for Dursley Running Club.

The organisers describe the course as following “trails and roads among picturesque villages woodlands and most importantly hills”.

After less than half a mile, the athletes start a mile-long ascent up to the Sally Beds, they then plunge back down to a height of 173metres before climbing for another two and half miles through Snowshill, past Longhill Plantation before reaching a high point of just of three hundred metres then returning to Broadway along an undulating route.

Crompton won the event, running a new course record of one hour 34:28mins in the process, leaving his nearest challenger over two minutes adrift.

Kate Browning ran another marathon over another challenging course at the Cornish Marathon, completing the 26 miles in three hours 51:44mins (provisional).

On Saturday, Matt Read had a great day at the Brecon Beacons Ultra.

The event is two laps of 23 miles, with just under six thousand feet of ascent and descent.

Read’s goal was to get across the finish line in under nine hours.

After a strong first lap, Read’s pace dropped but, with ten miles to go, he got a second wind and pushed on with another runner who had the same goal.

They crossed the line in eight hours 56 minutes in 44th place.

In Shropshire at the Wrekin Wrecker, Andrew Truswell finished 71st in one hour 22:44mins over roughly eight miles (12.9km) that involved 2,400ft (731 metres) of climbing, a ‘Category A Medium length’ fell race.

The final results are now in for the Gloucestershire Amateur Athletics’ Association Road Race Series 2017, with the best eight results counting.

Dursley RC did very well again both in individual categories but also the team results.

As ever, Dursley did well in the age categories with Eileen Hieron on 69 points (seven races) first LV70, Alice Lewis 64 points (seven races) second LV55 and Dave Saunders 80 points (eight races) first MV65.

Road Race Series captain Dave Saunders highlighted the performances of Mike Brown and Steve Barnes who competed in most of the series but didn’t manage to achieve maximum individual points as they were up against stiff opposition in very competitive categories.

DRC teams did well with many members contributing.

In the Men’s Open, DRC were sixth overall and seventh in the Men’s Vets.

However the DRC women surpassed the men placing fifth in the Women’s Open and fourth of the women’s veterans teams At Wotton, Matt Rogers was first runner home in 19:30mins and Margaret Johnson first woman home and sixth overall.

Martin Bragg was fourth overall, Garry Strickland seventh (second M50), Zoe Lammerton ninth (first W40) and Alice Lewis first VW55, topping the age gradings at 80.6 per cent.

At Stonehouse, Mouse Clutterbuck ran 22:11mins to place seventh overall (second M55) for a personal best.

DRC junior Luke Davis lead the charge at Kingsway, with Jadie Cotterell just behind him.

Other personal bests on the weekend included some excellent runs from Nicola Christopher and Terry Cother.
