Avon League U18s

Thornbury Town 1 Avonmouth 0

AFTER last week's first defeat of the season, Thornbury were determined to return to winning ways when they hosted Avonmouth in an u18 league fixture and they started strongly playing some good passing football.

However the visitors had the first chance and they thought they had taken the lead inside five mins only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Thornbury were having great success down the left flank via Ollie Thorne whose pace was causing the visitors a big headache and it was from one of his swerving runs and cross that Thorns took the lead when the Avonmouth defence only partially cleared the ball which fell to Charlie Exell on the edge of the box who smashed the ball passed the helpless keeper.

Thorns were now playing with great confidence and had further chances through Felix Brittan and Deny Di Mauro but both were denied by a combination of good goal keeping or a scrambled clearance.

Just before the break Exell had another chance when another long range rocket of a shot went narrowly wide.

The visitors started the second half much stronger and it was the Home team struggling to get control.

Avonmouth nearly drew level when a fine effort hit the crossbar and was cleared off the line.

Slowly Thorns got back into the game and had a great chance to extend the lead through Tom Cornock but again the visitors keeper cane to the rescue.

The home team forced a couple of corner kick and from one of these Louis Ogilvie’s header rebounded of the post to safety.

The game then defended into a midfield battle with both team’s cancelling each other out.

The last chance of the game fell to the home team when Di Mauro had an effort saved.

Thorns withstood a final push by Avonmouth for an equaliser to hold on for the win.
