WESTERN Storm’s Anya Shrubsole may have lost out on the Sports Personality of the Year individual prize, after being shortlisted for the trophy on Sunday, but she was left delighted as England won the Team of the Year award for their Women’s World Cup victory last summer.

Shrubsole was unplayable with the ball in a stunning victory over India by nine runs in July, which saw fellow Western Storm ace Heather Knight, captain of the West Country KIA Super League region and skipper of England, lift the trophy.

Shrubsole was named player of the match in that final after taking six wickets in 19 balls.

And, speaking just hours after the award at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Sunday, Shrubsole said: “Going into it (SPOTY), I was more bothered about winning the Team of the Year (rather than the individual).

“It is a really good award for what has been an amazing year for us as a team.”

Shrubsole, who lost out in the individual SPOTY award to athletics star Mo Farah, said she had no idea that England Women would win the Team of the Year award.

She added: “It is easy to be calm and relaxed there when you have got no thought that you are ever going to win. I could just sit there and enjoy the evening.

“It was just an amazing night to be part of.”

Shrubsole recalled the World Cup Final at Lord’s, saying: “To be part of the World Cup Final at a sold-out Lord’s was amazing but really like a huge team effort all around that got us to the final and got us over the line.”
