THORNBURY Town manager Andy Davies wants to make it a season to remember for his side after they lifted the Gloucestershire County League title on Tuesday night.

Thornbury beat AEK Boco 1-0 in a tense clash at Boco’s Greenbank Road ground in Bristol via an early goal from captain Pete Fowler.

And that was enough to secure their crown and promotion to the Western League as second-placed Lebeq United were unable to catch them and third-placed Frampton, needing to win all of their last five matches and hope Town lose all of theirs, could only draw at home to Patchway Town.

Boco could have won the league if they had beaten Town and taken victories from the six other games they had remaining, once again with Thornbury losing all of theirs.

However, the scenes of joy at the end of a game, played in pouring rain, said everything about a tremendous league campaign.

Now Thornbury want to cap it by doing the double and beating Frampton United in the Gloucestershire Cup final on May 12 at Stonehouse Town FC.

Davies beamed: “We have done really well this year. The boys have been great. So roll on the cup final and let’s see if we can do the double.

“We have still got three games to play in the league and the cup final so we will all be looking forward to those as well.”

Davies praised his side for their success during the campaign, adding: “I think a few of the younger lads have got a bit more experience over the last few seasons, and I have a good combination of youth and experience in the squad.

“It has all come to fruition this year. We have only lost two games so far and fair play to the boys.

“I have had 18 players in the squad and it has been hard to keep everyone happy but everybody has been really good.”

As for next season, the manager added: “We are looking at the Western League. Now that we have won the league, we will get Foundation money (to upgrade the Mundys Playing Fields) so they can push on with the floodlights.

“We can go up to the next level now.”

Thornbury Town will be looking to celebrate their league triumph in front of their own fans at the Mundy Playing Field on Saturday when they play Broadwell Amateurs with a kick-off time of 3pm.
