THORNBURY’S unbeaten record in the West of England Premier League Prem 2 Glos/Wilts division came to an end on Saturday as they went down at home to Cheltenham.

And with second-placed Dumbleton beating Westbury and District away, it means Thornbury’s lead at the top of the table has been cut to just one point.

Cheltenham won the toss and batted first. Thornbury struck when their opponents were on 41 as opener Peter Woodland was caught by Sam Summerfield off Tom Bradley for 23.

Thornbury took another wicket soon afterwards when the other opener, Josh Breed, departed from a combination of a Dan Davis catch from a Luke Davis delivery.

That was 55-2 but two significant stands of 76 and 74 frustrated Thornbury as Cheltenham advanced to 206-5 before losing two more wickets for 39 runs before completing their fifty overs on 250-7.

Bradley and Dan Davis were the pick of the bowlers with two apiece. Luke Davis and Danny Slade both had a wicket with Josh Riggs running out another Cheltenham batsman.

It was a tough target for Thornbury to attack but they go off to a poor start and never really got going afterwards.

Opener Vishal Mamgai was caught for two after just three balls, and the usual foundation of Thornbury innings, Dan Davis, fell for 12 after hitting three boundaries when he was trapped lbw in front of his stumps.

And when Marc Lezar went for eight, Thornbury were in trouble at 29-3.

Dan Lezar and skipper Luke Davis tried to steady the ship and put on 66 for the fourth wicket before Lezar was clean bowled for thirty, having struck four boundaries and a six.

The struggle continued as Slade was out lbw for two and the league leaders were on 99-5, still 151 behind their opponents with half the batting side back in the pavilion.

Young Josh Riggs was caught and bowled for four but Luke Davies and Summerfield tried to build the innings again, reaching 142 before Davis was out for 46. Jack Gillett went a run later, and Summerfield was out for 34.

Harry Wormwell, at number ten, dug in and tried his best, hitting five fours in a knock of 34 before he was out for 34 and Thornbury ended 38 runs short on 212 all out and their undefeated run came to an end.
