THORNBURY Running Club's Rob Hopkins was back in the Lake District only four weeks after completing a 190-mile coast-to-coast ultra-marathon.

He would have been forgiven for a gentle reintroduction, but true to form chose to compete in a triathlon voted the world’s toughest Ironman.

The Triathlon X has almost 17,000 ft of ascent over the 140 miles of punishing Lake District terrain.

The 2.4 mile swim in Lake Windemere was the calm before the storm, a wet and windy 112 mile bike ride over some of the highest peaks in England.

After drying himself down, Rob had the small matter of a marathon to complete which featured a run to the top of Scafell Pike and back.

Rob added another impressive feat of endurance to his growing list, finishing in 17 hours 39:18 mins in 62nd place.

Nick Williams was almost a minute ahead of the second finisher at Thornbury Parkrun in a new personal best time of 18:28 mins, also the fastest time by a Thornbury runner on the home course.

Paul Harrod was next in 20:13 mins. Laura Orna set a new personal best time of 22:50 mins, which is also the fastest time on this course by a TRC woman.

She was followed by Lizzie Williams 23:24 mins, Peter Blenkiron new PB 26:41 mins, Chris Lee 28:24 mins, Clare Evans new PB 30:06 mins, Nigel Hale new PB 30:07 mins, Richard Illingworth 31:47 mins and Terry Robinson 47:12 mins.

At Chipping Sodbury parkrun, Kevin Wood set a new personal best of 22:03 mins, followed by Jay Bartley 24:50 mins, David Palmer 25:57 mins, Christopher Pritchard 28:10 mins and Anne Palmer in 32:10 mins. Kevin Arnold ran 23:02 mins at Exeter Riverside parkrun.

Meanwhile, the next TRC ‘Introductory Course for New Runners’ is scheduled to start on Tuesday.

The last course was highly successful with nine of the 12 participants now club members.
