EX-FOREST GREEN Rovers defender Sammy Hallsworth says promotion is the aim with Watford Ladies.

The Golden Girls are plying their trade in the Women’s National League this season and are looking to return to the second tier.

“We are in a phase of regrowth as a team and redevelopment within the club. Our aim for this season is ultimately to win the league if not push for promotion,” Sammy said.

The former Hartpury student’s career came from humble beginnings, making her professional debut for Forest Green at the age of 16 after being spotted by then-manager Josh.

She revealed: “I was actually training for college when Josh, the manager at the time, approached me and asked me to get involved with training.

“I owe him a lot. He took a chance on me in the women’s game, developed me as a player and made my time at Forest Green an enjoyable one.”

After Rovers removed the first-team from the league, the versatile player joined Swindon Town, spending little over a year with the Robins and becoming captain in the process.

Hallsworth added: “At that time I decided I should move on. Swindon welcomed me into the team and made me feel as though I was one of their own.

“Playing with those girls taught me that perseverance pays off and hard work beats talent.”

Now at Watford, Sammy is focused on getting the Lady Hornets back to the Championship.

“I had my heart set on a club that had goals and a desire to be back where they belong,” she admitted.

“I am planning to stay with Watford for the foreseeable future.”
