FORM GUIDE

Forest Green won their first game at Grismby Town 4-1 while Oldham lost 2-1 at home to MK Dons on the opening day.

The Latics haven't won a league game since April 2 - that's nine without victory. They drew seven of their final eight matches last season,

OPPOSITION

After 22 years in the third tier, Oldham were relegated to League Two and are at this level for the first time since 1970.

Oldham parted company with Ritchie Wellens after the club's relegation and in came the Frankie Bunn for his first managerial job. Bunn had previously been a coach at Coventry City, Rochdale and Huddersfield Town under 18s.

There have been plenty of changes at the club. They lost key players Ryan McLaughlin, Aaron Amadi-Holloway and striker Craig Davies.

They have bought in some experienced players with the likes of Chris O'Grady, Andy Taylor and Ishmael Miller signing on at Boundary Park.

The club also brought back Jose Baxter, who scored 15 times between 2012 and 2013 in his first spell at Oldham. They've also signed the highly rates Sam Surridge on loan from Bournemouth. The forward scored eight times for Yeovil Town last season.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

Mark Cooper:

"You have to work harder than the opposition. Having shown the players the video of the Grimsby game the key word was intensity of the performance. We know we've got good players but if you worked harder than the opposition then you have a real big chance to win the game.

"I think everyone wants to win games at the start of the season. People will say we were gifted two goals but my players worked so hard that they forced the opposition into those errors so we have to be really intense and get after the opposition.

"The game only presents an opportunity if we play well. It doesn't matter who you're playing against, you have to do all the basics right.

"Joseph Mills had a good spell their, Carl Winchester was a good player for them but it's about what we do. We've got full respect for Oldham and their strengths and we have to try and negate those strengths and put our own game plan into place."

Oldham boss Frankie Bunn:

“I still don’t know what to expect from League Two. Obviously it’s our first time at this level for a long time, and it is a league that is new to us.

“We’re learning all the time. We’ve watched Forest Green, they look like a good footballing team, so we’ve got to go there and basically stick to our game-plan. Hopefully we’ll come away with something."

“We’ll have to cope with allsorts this season, we don’t know how many teams will be direct or whatever but we’ll be ready.

“They had a great result at Grimsby and they are a good footballing team."

SNJ Verdict

One side will be brimming with confidence while the other will be trying to pick themselves up.

Oldham look like a club on a downward spiral. They were flirting with relegation in League One for a couple of years until they slipped into the fourth tier last season.

Their squad is relatively small and their manager is inexperienced. There are a few players who can cause Forest Green problems in 20-year-old Surridge and Baxter. The latter made his return to senior football for the first time since 2016 after an FA ban.

Rovers thoroughly deserved their 4-1 win on Saturday. A lot of the new signings made a real impact. Christian Doidge also got off the mark and he now has the weight of transfer speculation lifted off his shoulders after the window shut last night.

FGR will want to kick off their home campaign in style.

Prediction: Forest Green 2-0 Oldham.
