Chipping Sodbury Town FC received a harsh lesson from a competitive Bridgwater side.

The Sods are rooted to the bottom of the Toolstation Western League after four defeats from their opening four league games.

The run has included losses at the hands of Willand Rovers, Bridport and a 6-0 humbling by Brislington.

However the match on Saturday, marked their biggest defeat as they were thrashed by the league leaders.

Sodbury were missing some key first team players, but were boosted by the return of midfield playmaker Liam Pullen to the first team side following a groin injury.

In goal Kieren Provis also made his competitive debut for the team, producing a fine penalty save, but could do little about the final result.

Bridgwater started the game strongest and were ahead within minutes as Jake Brown scored with a fine header from a free kick that was whipped in by Harry Horton.

Brown was heavily involved the opening exchanges of the match, going on to win a penalty in the 17th minute after being tripped by a Sodbury player whilst running through on goal.

Jack Taylor stepped up for the away side, however his fine penalty which was aimed right into the bottom right corner of the net was expertly tipped wide by the debutant Provis.

Fans were hoping that the save would spur Sodbury into action, however they were being restricted to efforts from range and counter attacks as Bridgwater dominated.

The home side were made to pay for some more lacklustre defending as Taylor made amends for his penalty miss by heading in a fine cross from the right.

Tom Ellis then had a goal disallowed for offside for Bridgwater as they continued to push forward. It wasn’t long before he did have his goal though.

Horton played in another dangerous free-kick, with Ellis getting free of his marker and powering past Provis to make it 3-0 with only half an hour played.

Horton added another just before half time to make it 4-0 to the visitors.

The second half started and Sodbury were again second best.

Taylor and Horton then combined well to fashion a chance for Sam Towler, he finished into the roof of the net to make it five.

Kurt Robinson then scored with a cross-shot that found its way into the far corner.

Ryan Burrows then converted after running and finishing past Provis, again leaving the Sodbury keeper no chance.

Burrows could have scored another as he rounded the Sodbury keeper, however Provis did just enough.

Ian Bellinger rounded off the scoring for Bridgwater who never looked like throwing the game away after going ahead.

Sodbury almost netted a consolation with Luke Burman letting fly towards the top corner. However, Jake Viney made a fantastic save to deny the Chipping Sodbury substitute.

Manager Neil Simons admitted after the game that he took responsibility for the defeat, but Sodbury now search for a new manager after he stepped down ahead of their FA Cup match next weekend against Bristol Manor Farm from the league above them.
