Football: Nash fires Swans to victory on debut against Yate reserves

Surridge Gloucestershire County League - Slimbridge 4 Yate Town reserves 2

KARL Nash made an immediate impact on his Slimbridge debut as he set up two goals before scoring the winner against Yate Town reserves.

The ex-Berkeley Town striker joined Gloucester City in the summer and remains on the books at the Southern League Premier Club while gaining first team football for the Swans.

Justin Cattle could have opened the visitors’ account on five minutes but shot wide. The Swans had numerous chances without capitalising before Smyth had a chance for The Bluebells, but his effort was cleared for a corner.

Slimbridge scored their first goal on 38 minutes when a Chandler free kick from deep inside his own area was nodded forward by Marvyn Roberts to Nash, who in turn fed Craig Cole, to slot the ball past the advancing Crowcott.

The lead was short-lived as Cattle punished sloppy defending on 40 minutes to equalise.

The Swans regained the lead on 59 minutes when Nash fed Craig Cole whose cross was met by defender Will Wellon to slot home from 20 yards for a rare goal.

On 69 minutes Nash got his first goal for the club, powerfully shooting home from 20 yards after a strong run.

On 72 minutes, Thomas Cole got the fourth goal when his direct free kick from 25 yards struck the crossbar and was correctly adjudged to have crossed the line by assistant Bowen.

Cattle got his second goal from the spot 12 minutes from time, after Preece was adjudged to have fouled in the penalty area.

Yate had a few chances in the last ten minutes to put pressure on the Swans, but they were not converted.

Manager James Cole said: “We tended to take our foot off the pedal after we scored our fourth goal but we are still in second place.

“We now have three away games on the bounce, including leaders Kings Stanley. It would be nice to take maximum points from these games.”
