Gloucester Three - Bristol Telephones 23 Wotton RFC 11
THE men in black made their annual trip to the far side of Bristol for their away exchange with Bristol Telephones. This was a tough encounter for Wotton against a seasoned pack. With Wotton playing into the sun, Telephones started strongly with their predicted forward oriented play. Wotton defended well with big tackles connecting from Budd and Davies, however, it was the home team who crossed the line first. Although the Wotton pack could not gain much advantage at the scrum engagements, they competed well at the lineouts and other set pieces to ensure ball for the backs.
A telegraphed move saw Sam Fitzjohn intercept and score for the Blacks. The hosts were penalised within range of the posts. Acting captain Marlow signalled for the kick to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With the home team leading 11-8 at the break, Wotton felt this game was there for the taking. The second half started with a hungry Wotton. Penalties going either way made it 13-11. However, 60 minutes of this bruising encounter took its toll and injuries to both Driver and Wychard saw Wotton down to 14 men. This proved to be too much to ask with Telelphones crossing the line twice more before the final whistle.
This Saturday is the annual Fred Morris memorial game between a current Wotton XV and Fred Morris Invitation XV captained by Ollie Boyle. Kick off 2.30pm at New Road playing field. All welcome.
Wotton’s players will be raising money for charity by dressing up in Christmas themed outfits around the village after the game.
