JIM Harvey says his Forest Green side need to learn how to win games.

Rovers dominated against relegation rivals York City on Tuesday night but they only drew 1-1 after a late Lee Ayres own goal and they could go on to rue the two points dropped in their battle to stay in the Blue Square Premier.

Forest Green have not won in their last seven league games, though they have drawn nine of their last 11, and their inability to close games out means they are still in deep trouble near the bottom.

Manager Harvey said: “It’s very difficult to keep getting these results.

“We have conceded a lot of goals late in games and maybe it’s a case where the concentration goes a little bit. The team needs to learn how to win games.”

Harvey was full of praise for the performance against York and said conceding the late goal was ‘heartbreaking’.

“They’ve played some marvellous football, showed high energy levels and no lack of ability.

“We were always looking for the second goal, that didn’t come, but I couldn’t ask for any more from the players.

“It’s heartbreaking for them - the football was good enough to win three or four games and they only got one point so it’s very difficult.”

“Martin (Foyle, York manager) apologised that they got a point because they were totally outplayed from start to finish.

“Normally we do score quite freely but it didn’t come and they were always susceptible to the opposition taking one chance and that’s what happened.”

Harvey, who is expected to contest his recent sending off at Stevenage, was again left bemoaning an officials decision which cost his side, as he felt York’s free kick leading up to the equaliser should have gone the other way.

He said: “I thought it was a handball for us and when he’s given the free kick against us and I think that’s what has wrong footed all the players.

“They were all in a state of shock. We believe the referee has made another bad decision.”

It was much the same story for Harvey at Mansfield on Saturday as he lambasted man in the middle Colin Harwood who red-carded Rovers’ top scorer Andy Mangan for swearing at the end of the first half.

He said: “The adrenaline from Andy was up, but there is not a game that goes by when boys don’t come out with that sort of language, and a quiet word of warning would have been better.

“This referee has been at this level for a long time, and I’ve had him on a number of occasions.

“Similar things have happened, and for me he took the game away from us and just ruined it.” Forest Green will be without Andy Mangan and captain Darren Jones through suspension for the trip to Altrincham on Saturday.
